One of the most important things you can do is focusing the mind on one thing at a time. I know it can be easier said than done, but when it is done you can have anything you want.
How we trick ourselves
Why is it that when we become adults we try to do so many things at one time, yet as we were growing up it never made sense to do that? From early childhood to the teenage years we pick up so many important skills we learn to swim, read, ride a bike, drive a car, and hopefully many other skills along the way.
Yet when we get older we can often try to do so many things at once, we can get overwhelmed to the point we feel stuck. Some might say “well as an adult we have more responsibilities so I have to do it that way”. What if I said there was a system you could use to make this process much easier, and that you are tricking yourself into thinking you can’t.
Just stick with me on this I think you will be glad that you did.
How action can cause inaction
I have been a personal trainer for over 15 years, and have also several books on the psychology of the mind. From all of this I have learned how funny we can all be.
I am sure many of you have been in the time to get into shape boat. You start a program, clean your eating up, take the stairs instead of the elevator, and cut out the sweet. You think to yourself I got this, and in two weeks you make a mistakes give up and say screw it. Then in your reasoning you rationalize how it just wasn’t for you.
Just let that last paragraph sit for a moment. Why do we try to do so much at one time. Focus your energy on one piece of the puzzle just one piece, and all the other layers will begin to follow. Let’s try to go through the process one more time just a little differently.
Taking a different approach
So lets say you are getting serious about an exercise program. Start with just one thing that’s it. Instead of taking the elevator you decide to just take the stairs. Let that habit build in. Imagine how you would feel just doing that, your legs would feel more tone, and you would feel like you are achieving something. Once that habit builds go to the next thing, and than the next.
Now I am not saying it won’t still take work, but if you do it in bite size pieces you will feel accomplished; and when you feel accomplished you want to do more things that make you feel accomplished. This works not only with fitness, but all areas in life. Take the time to focus the mind on one thing.
Make a list
I always make a list of the goals I am trying to accomplish. I will put them in numerical order of importance, and I will not even attempt to look at the other goals until I finish the first goal. This strategy has worked wonders for me. It keeps me in check, and helps me focus on the task at hand.
Just take one thing at a time. Honestly that is how the greats become great. Greatness comes from doing the small things correct and consistently. Building the proper habits to build a solid foundation.
Greatness is in you
Just a reminder that this is just one approach. Different approaches work for different people. If you haven’t tried this strategy give it a try to see how it works for you. My focus is for people to live the optimal life they were meant to live. Always remind yourself that greatness is in you, but in order to bring it out proper habits must be built.
