Eating healthy food does not have to be the hardest thing in the world to do with a few tips, you can improve your eating, your overall health, and also lose a few inches on your waist.

What are unhealthy foods

I have been a personal trainer for over 17 years and some trainers might be pretty upset with me for what my definition of an unhealthy food is, but that is ok I can take it. I have to say that I personally do not believe in unhealthy foods within reason. My belief is everything with the right moderation is perfectly fine.

Let’s go into detail on this though, because I do not want to get too much flack. It is true that eating fried foods, sugary foods, and foods filled with a combination of fats and sugars can be extremely unhealthy to the body, but if you avoid it so much that you have such an intense craving that you end up caving going overboard and then quitting all together that is not good either.

If you have been good and consistent and you want to have a little ice cream just to take the edge off, eat the ice cream. So by definition are these foods unhealthy yes they are, but they are healthy in terms of keeping you emotionally satisfied (within reason of course).

Now it is true people are in different boats as well, and if you are getting ready for a figure show or a major event where you are going to display your physique that is a different story. No ice cream for you, but if you are a person looking to have basic overall health having a so called unhealthy food from time to time is not the end of the world. Although I would limit it to 5-10% of your overall diet, and if you are able to avoid them all together good for you.

Make some food choices difficult

One of your safest bets when trying to eat healthier is to make eating unhealthy foods harder to get to. I am sure most of us have been to a potluck. Nothing good has ever come out of those in terms of so called healthy eating, because everything is there for the picking.

Just like those potlucks if you leave junk food around the house you might snack on it and not even be aware of it. So make it difficult to get to those sugar treats or fried foods that you can crave. Also, if there is a certain treat you crave, give yourself a destination of 10 miles or more to buy it from, so you will only get it if you are really craving it.

Tips to help sugar

Now most of us know just how dangerous too much sugar can be for us, but it is just so difficult to say no to sometimes. One thing you can try doing is eating a large salad. I swear after I do that I just do not feel the need to eat a sugary treat anymore. It is like the equivalent of brushing your teeth, and then drinking a soda. You don’t want to ruin a perfectly good brush job.

Another tip as weird as it may sound is eating a dill pickle. That sour taste can throw off the craving of eating that sugary goodness.

One of my favorite tips is to drink a large glass of water. That surprisingly usually takes the craving right away for me.

Try some of these tips and let me know how they work out for you. Also, if you have any tips of your own please feel free to share them in the comments below.

How to really eat healthy foods

As funny as this one is going to sound it is actually very powerful. Make it your choice. Choose to eat healthy. When you make the decision your own it is empowering vs doing for an external reason.

Think about it when you eat healthier, how much better do you feel overall. My energy levels personally sky rocket when I eat clean, and I love the fact that it is my choice.

The second I start thinking I can’t eat this because it is unhealthy only makes me want it that much more, but if I say I choose to eat healthy because it feels good the process becomes much easier.

Try to make the habit unconscious

Making small changes in your eating will do wonders for you and you if you have really bad eating or drinking habits. Start with small changes so it feels like you are not making a large overall jump. If you drink soda every day, try to only have it every other day, or only on the weekends.

Small steps is the key to sustained success. I know you could go crazy do a hardcore diet for 4 weeks and lose quite a bit of weight, but the odds of slingshotting back to your original routine or worse have only been increased. Small consistent steps that do not feel too overwhelming is the key.

Enjoy yourself

This is a journey, and you can only do the best you can. If you make a mistake reassess, learn, plan, and try again. I know you can do anything you put your mind to. with the right team backing you, anything can be obtained with the right game plan. Just remember to enjoy the process along the way. Life is about living it. So live your life to the fullest.
