What do you want in life

At the age of 6 I got one of the most powerful messages from my dad that still sits with me to this day. He had me look into the mirror, and he told me whatever I want in life comes down to the person looking back at you.

It made me think as a kid, and I still think about it as an adult. Whatever I want comes down to me. After that the question is always, so what do you want?

Having a definition of what you want can guide you and put you in a much greater chance of success. Knowing what you want it can help you decide what kind of friends you would like to associate with.

I don’t necessary believe there are bad people, but there are people who do not fit the mold of what you want to do in life.

If you want to be an entrepreneur who makes 6 figures, and you have a friend who wants to drink and party all day. Both of your goals are not in alignment, so it would probably be best that you both keep your hang out time to a minimum or to none at all. It just doesn’t help either of you for where you are going in life.

Choose those who root for you

I am happy to say I learned this lesson very young. I have a solid crew of people who absolutley want the best for me. My success is their success, and their success becomes my success.

Iron sharpens iron and we come together to make one another stronger and help each other consistently grow as individuals.

Let’s say your dreams are not necessary the most similar to each other. You want a friend who is going to believe in you, and will be rooting for your success. Having a downer in life does not help you achieve your goals, and it can even make you resentful to the person who is being the downer.

It is also important that I note a person who roots for you is not a yes-man or woman. They believe in you but they will challenge you, and tell you the opinions on the best way to go about a situation. They may be right or wrong, but they are coming from a place that is ultimately on your side. Any opinions they have are just formed because they want the best for you and your goals.

So make sure you have friends who believe in you and believe in your dream, and will call you out if you divert from it. People who know you well enough that will love you and challenge you to be your best you.

You are who you hangout with

Have you ever heard the saying you are who you hangout with? Show me the five people you surround yourself with and are good friends with and I will show you yourself.

We associate with those we surround ourselves with. Whether it is good or bad. If you are with 5 people who do community service on a regular bases, odds are you are doing it or will begin to do it. If you are around 5 people who cheat on their significant other odds are you have too or will eventually.

This is a very powerful lesson to know, and I have seen people who neglect it. Saying they are their own person and their friends do not dictate their actions, but the truth is we are social creatures and we take on the habits of those we surround ourselves with.

Knowing this and being honest about it gives you the chance to look at your life, and say am I where I want to be? If not start with looking at who you surround yourself with. This is not to put the blame on them it is on you. Look within and if things are going to plan that is awesome I am happy for you!; but if they are not look within and make the changes needed in life.

One of the best places to start is with looking at who you are associating with.

After that look in the mirror and ask yourself are you happy with what you see?

Please take the time to comment below and let me know your story. Are you achieving what you want in life and do you agree with my take on choosing your friends wisely? Would love to hear from you.

    Hi there Clifford,

Thank you kindly for sharing this rather valuable lesson on life with us all, it is absolutely appreciated, thanks.

This article reminds me a lot about the saying that our lives are truly a reflection of our inner thoughts and feelings and are merely reflected to our outer world, in short, if we want success we must start first on our own mental attitudes regarding wealth.

Great article. It is true that you tend to have the same characteristics as those you hang out with. The reason being; We like to BE around people who share similar viewpoints. For good or ill. You want to be a success? Surround yourself with it. That piece of advice your father gave you, was, is, and always will be…. SPECTACULAR! If it is to be…it is up to me. Be the change you wish to see.
