7 habits of successful people-inspired by the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

I will put my take on the 7 habits of successful people and why each habit is so important to have.

Be proactive

I remember the first time wrestling actually became hard for me. I was a great wrestler in high school, and was a state champion my senior year. I felt I was just a natural at it and it would always just come to me easily. Until I got into Arizona State University, I got tossed around like a rag doll. I had never felt so small before. I thought to myself I was a state champion, and quickly realized everyone in that room had been state champions.

I had a couple of options I could have just quit, I could have wined and complained, or I could work to get better! I chose to work to get better. I took the necessary actions every day. I came in got tossed around learned, and repeated the process. After three months everything started to click, and I was hanging with everyone in that room.

The reason I am telling this story is because I was doing something I was already talented in and still got to a level where everyone is not only talented they put in the work to be great at their craft. Eventually no matter how good you are at something you will find that moment where you will have to be proactive to make any kind of progress.

I knew I wasn’t going to get any better just sitting on the sideline watching everyone else. I had to be tailored in fire. As the saying goes iron sharpens iron.

Being able to take on things head first and taking charge, instead of waiting for things to happen and then reacting after is a very important skill set to have. Have you ever seen an individual ever do anything with any type of sustained success just waiting for that right moment, or just having wishful thinking? They might get lucky once, but it just cannot be sustained because they are not taking the proper action to make their goals a reality.

If you want something to happen you have to go after it Take action, be a proactive individual and watch how things will come together more readily.

Begin with the end in mind

Many times for a person to believe it they have to see it. When you set out on a project and you know what the final goal of that project is going to be it makes the whole process much easier to accomplish.

Just like when I got on that wrestling mat, I knew the final destination was to improve my overall skill as a wrestler and put it together in a way I hadn’t before. I saw the end in mind, every time I failed I knew I was a little closer to my success. I could see it as clear as day.

Have faith in yourself, and know what your end goal or goals are going to look like. Get all of your senses involved if you can. Put it into your mind where you can feel it, touch it, taste it, see it, and smell it. The more detailed you can see the end the better chance you have of getting there.

Put First things First

As we all know it can be extremely easy to get distracted with life. We can have a plan and the detour from the plan rather rapidly. I usually think of a day when I plan to train but I decide let me just check my emails first. Then that turns to let me just watch this one episode, and we know especially if it is Netflix one episode quickly turns to four, and your looking at the clock saying where did the time go.

Then you justify it with OK I will workout tomorrow lol. Just typing it makes me laugh because I have been there. Now if I would have just exercised first I would have gotten my day started off right. Break a great sweat and then I would probably feel so good that I would decide to get some work done writing a blog or making a YouTube video, and from there I would probably take a nice walk in the park and enjoy the breeze. Ultimately feeling like I had a very productive day

This is what makes putting first things first can do, it helps you to build the momentum to make for a great day, and it keeps you moving towards things that are more productive overall. Leading to one’s overall success.

Think Win/Win

This is one of my favorites. There is nothing better than win both sides win. Imagine everyone getting what they desired. A negotiation were both sides are equally happy with the deal made.

In life, you never want to run over anyone, because there will be a time when you are the one who will get ran over.

Think of it this way. If you went into a car dealership, and you had an idea of the car you wanted and the price you would be willing to pay for that car. If you found a sales man who made you pay quite a bit more than you were willing to and you didn’t get the deal you wanted. Neither party really win’s in that situation. Sure the sales man got a little more commission from you, but you would not be a repeat customer, and you would probably tell your friends to avoid that sales man or even the dealership altogether.

Now imagine if you had a sales man instead give you the exact car you wanted at a reasonable price. You both win. You will speak kindly of him, and next time you needed to make a purchase he would be your guy.

Do your best to always find a way to make things win win, because when you do all parties involved become successful that way.

Seek first to understand then to be understood

I have been on this planet for 37 years and have been married for 11 of those years. Now I am not saying I am old by any means but what I am saying is the longer I have been here the more and more I understand how important this lesson really is.

When you can understand others and empathize with them your chances of reciprocating it increases exponentially.

Have you ever been in a debate with someone who didn’t try to see your side at all? It probably made you not want to see their side they irritated you so much, but the truth of the matter is the second you take the time to see their side, it can open them up enough to try to see your side as well.

I have become very strong at this myself and I think it is a beautiful skill to have, because we are all more similar than some would like to believe, and when we take the time to open up to discuss it; It can make for a better understanding of all parties involved.

In reality this is another way to help create the win-win situation.

Synergies

I will say as individuals each of us hold power and potential to do some of the most amazing things. We have all had moments when we have done amazing things. Now some may have done it more than others, but one thing we all have in common is that we all have.

Now imagine if you had a team who was backing you, all out to achieve the same goal and in sync with you. Think of how powerful that would be. This is the power of synergizing. When everyone on the team is on the same page, each with their own strengths and abilities coming together to make great things happen.

Honestly this is why I love what I do, I love bringing people together and watching them bring out their full potential with an amazing team effort. Happy attracts happy, and light attracts light. Like I say there is greatness in all of us, now imagine that greatness coming together.

The possibilities would be endless from life like prosthetic limbs to cures for many cancers. A team that works together is truly an amazing thing, and there isn’t a better success than all of us being successful together.

Sharpen the Saw

Always looking to improve and moving in a direction to make yourself better. In some form or fashion always improving.

We all know what it feels like to be in a zone when we are trying to get better, it is invigorating really. The accomplishment of I am getting a little better every day. It is the epitome of living. The challenge to always sharpen the saw make you feel alive.

I have seen it time and time again, as humans we thrive on the proper challenges given to us. We just have to remind ourselves how it feels when you get a little better, and improve.

Conclusion

I hope you all enjoyed this article. I will be writing a review on the 7 habits of highly effective people eventually, but wanted to change it up a bit and have my own spin on it. Let me know how you liked it in the comments below, and remember there is greatness in you!
